About My Blog
We are your average family.
A husband and wife, a 6 year old daughter, and two needy greedy dogs. Like most people people, we have fairly good eating habits and do our best to stay healthy... most of the time.
We are you.
We are them.
We are everybody.
Then a few weeks ago, my daughter started occasionally refusing to eat meat.
At first, she kept asking what animal we were eating, and shivered in disgust when she was told. Sometimes, she would still eat it, other times, it was out of the question. Of course, we supported her choices and never made her eat anything she did not want.
Suddenly there was a shift. I remember we were in France eating langoustines (a type of shrimp) at a seaside restaurant. I was loving it, ripping off their little heads, pulling out their legs and tearing off the armor from their delicious bodies. I was enjoying the moment, remembering the carelessness of my childhood summer holidays, when I realised that Maya was not eating and just staring at me. She pretended not to be hungry and told me, when we got home that night: "I was so sad to watch you eat those shrimp tonight, that it made me sick and I could not eat my food. These little animals just wanted to be happy in the sea...".
This was such an eye opening moment... and it turned me off completely.
So here we are, just a few weeks later, eating a vegetarian diet and exploring this exciting world of culinary options, we had never really considered before. Tofu, beans, mushrooms, meat alternatives. There is so much out there and we cannot wait to try it all.
This being said, we did decide that we would still eat meat, when we are cooking something special for friends and family. We feel that, if we respect this rather harmful ingredient by eating it rarely, buying it from trusted suppliers, spending the appropriate amount of money on it, and turning it into a dish that will provide us and our friends with happy memories, then we can live with our choices.
It's our version of a vegetarian life. For now.
I am sure there must be other mothers out there, facing the same struggle with their children. If so, I hope that this journal will become a helpful source of information with research, recipes, and of course my daughter's feedback.
